As photovoltaic (PV) systems age, various factors can contribute to poor system performance. Some causes are predictable, such as losses due to soiling or long-term array degradation. Others are unexpected, such as bypass diode failures or cracked modules. I-V curve tracers are crucial for identifying symptoms of low performance, capturing all current and voltage operating points of a PV generator—something no other equipment can do.
What is the I-V Curve?
The I-V curve (current versus voltage) is a graphical representation showing the relationship between electrical current (I) and voltage (V) in a PV module or string. This curve is essential for understanding the performance and efficiency of PV systems, providing critical information about the electrical behavior of modules under various operating conditions.
Each module datasheet provides a model I-V curve representing all possible combinations of current and voltage under standard test conditions (STC). When a measured I-V curve differs significantly in height, width, or shape from the predicted I-V curve adjusted for real irradiance and temperature conditions, the nature of the deviation provides clues about potential performance issues. I-V curve tracers, such as the Fluke Solmetric, are fundamental in detecting these performance symptoms.

Photovoltaic systems are promising solutions for meeting sustainable energy demands while maintaining energy efficiency and offering cost reductions, payback periods, and extended lifespans without the need for constant revisions. I-V curve testing is essential for evaluating the electrical behavior of solar modules and optimizing energy production. This curve relates voltage and current at the output of a module or string, allowing identification of whether modules are functioning well or presenting problems.
The importance of I-V Curve Testing
I-V curve testing is fundamental for:
- PV System Commissioning: Initial verification to ensure modules are functioning according to specifications.
- Diagnosis and Maintenance: Identification of issues such as shading, manufacturing defects, degradation, and connection failures.
- Performance Optimization: Fine-tuning adjustments to maximize efficiency and energy production.
With temperature and irradiance sensors, it is possible to measure key electrical parameters in two parametrizations: operating conditions (OPC) and standard test conditions (STC). Normalizing measured values allows comparison with STC conditions.
Although I-V curve tracing is often neglected by integrators due to equipment cost or considered an optional item under ABNT NBR 16274:2014, it is a valuable tool for diagnosing the health status of strings in PV systems, revealing short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, and peak power. Issues such as installation faults, module defects, and mechanical impacts can be detected by I-V curve tracers, avoiding customer dissatisfaction and energy production performance problems.
I-V curve testing can be performed during system commissioning or periodic checks, comparing the measured curve with that provided by the manufacturer to detect defects. Safety considerations are fundamental, and the installation of auxiliary sensors and opening of the disconnect switch are important steps to perform tests safely.

In large-scale solar power plants, I-V curve traces are measured in isolated combiner boxes, allowing identification of source circuits with low performance. The Performance Factor (PF) quantifies the correspondence between the measured and predicted I-V curves; a factor between 90% and 100% indicates good operation.

I-V curve testing is a vital tool in commissioning and maintenance of PV systems. By providing a detailed view of module electrical behavior, this test helps ensure that PV systems operate with maximum efficiency and reliability. Regular performance of this test can extend system lifespan and optimize energy production, ensuring a robust return on solar investment.
