The Power of Mini-Generation and Micro-Generation

The Power of Mini-Generation and Micro-Generation

Brazilian Solar Potential: An Expanding Reality

Brazil, a tropical country by nature, possesses one of the largest solar generation potentials in the world. Despite occasional hurdles, such as the cancellation of renewable energy auctions, the solar sector continues to grow strongly. The Energy Research Company (EPE) had projected that installed solar capacity would reach 25 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, representing about 10% of the national electricity matrix. However, the current scenario has exceeded these projections.

Centralized and Distributed Generation in Expansion

Of the total estimated for 2030, approximately 17 GW will come from centralized generation and 8 GW from distributed generation, including mini-generation and micro-generation systems installed in residences, commercial properties, rural estates, and public buildings.

Current Solar Generation Panorama

According to the Brazilian Photovoltaic Energy Association (ABSOLAR), Brazil surpassed the mark of 38 GW of operational capacity in 2024, considering both centralized and distributed generation. Of this total, more than 80% come from grid-connected micro-generation and mini-generation systems.

Ongoing Projects and Investments in the Sector

The sector's expansion is accompanied by major investments. An example is Enel Green Power Brazil, which completed solar projects with a total installed capacity of more than 1 GW, such as the Nova Olinda and Ituverava power plants. These installations together generate enough energy to supply over one million homes per year.

Incentives for Solar Mini-Generation

The sector benefits from significant incentives. One of the most relevant is the ICMS tax exemption for energy generated by distributed mini-generation and injected into the grid, established by CONFAZ Agreement ICMS No. 16/15. Additionally, BNDES began financing up to 100% of renewable distributed generation projects, further strengthening the sector.

Benefits of Distributed Generation

Installation without Need for Large Areas

Unlike centralized generation, micro-generation and mini-generation systems can be installed on rooftops, parking lots, and facades. This eliminates the need for dedicated land, simplifying licensing and reducing costs.

Facilitated Connection and Tariff Savings

These systems use the existing electrical grid infrastructure, which reduces connection investment. Additionally, they allow for direct savings on energy bills, being especially advantageous in regions where the utility tariff is high.

Property Appreciation and Energy Security

Beyond immediate savings, solar generation appreciates properties and provides consumers with greater energy independence, avoiding price fluctuations and possible supply interruptions.

Labor Market and Opportunities in the Solar Sector

Solar energy is also a driving force in job creation. Each megawatt installed generates 25 to 30 direct and indirect jobs. Considering the expansion target, the sector can generate more than 750,000 jobs by 2030.

Hydro Crisis and Tariff Flags: Boost for Solar Energy

Instability in hydro supply and the adoption of tariff flags, which increase electricity bills, have made solar energy a strategic alternative for consumers. Since 2021, there has been an increase of over 350% in demand for distributed generation systems, driving the adoption of mini-generation in the commercial and agricultural sectors.

Environmental Commitment and Sustainability

Beyond savings, solar energy contributes significantly to reducing CO₂ emissions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable sources already represent more than 30% of global generation. The goal is to reach 50% by 2030, in line with commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Financial Viability and Return on Investment

Even with an average payback period of 4 to 7 years, photovoltaic systems are considered solid investments. With a 30-year performance warranty, consumers can achieve significant accumulated savings over the system's lifespan.
